Hiring pain points -- and what to do about them...



One of the biggest challenges my clients are facing right now is with the hiring process. From finding qualified candidates to candidate drop-off rates, the recruitment process can be a daunting task. However, by focusing on streamlining our process and enhancing the candidate experience we can overcome these obstacles and hire effectively.

One of the key pain points in hiring is the talent shortage that many industries are currently experiencing. To address this issue, it is essential to improve the candidate experience to make our organization stand out. Provide a positive and engaging process for applicants. Offer clear and engaging communication and provide some information on your goals for the company and position to attract the right applicants.
In some industries, the pool of qualified candidates with the required skills is so slim that the best option may be to include comprehensive training after hiring to allow for a more diverse group of applicants. Look at a candidate's transferable skills or knowledge that may indicate an ability to learn and grow the skills needed for the job.

Another common pain point is candidate drop-off during the recruitment process. To mitigate this challenge, we must ensure that our communication with candidates is compelling and clear. Keeping candidates informed about the status of their application, providing feedback, and setting clear expectations can help maintain their interest and engagement throughout the hiring process. Too much time between communication may signal disinterest to candidates. Call candidates to remind them of interviews and encourage them to let you know if they need to cancel or reschedule. This can decrease the number of no-shows to interviews and save time, money, and frustration.

Streamlining the interview process is also crucial in addressing hiring pain points. By optimizing your procedure, we can reduce time-to-hire and improve the overall candidate experience. Simplifying scheduling, coordinating efficiently with hiring managers, and providing timely feedback to candidates can help expedite the process and secure top talent before they lose interest. If your organization currently requires multiple interviews, scale down. Unless you are hiring at the executive level, one, or two if truly necessary, interviews are enough. Ask the right questions and tailor each interview based on the candidate. Template questions are a good starting point and can save time, but won't help you get to know each person and may leave important information uncovered.

Listening to what candidates want and need is another essential aspect of improving the recruitment process. By understanding their preferences, motivations, and concerns, we can tailor our approach to meet their expectations and create a more personalized experience. Incorporating candidate feedback into our hiring strategies can help us refine our processes and attract candidates who are the best fit for our organization.

In addition to these tips, it is crucial to continuously evaluate our recruitment practices, identify your industry and company's specific pain points, and implement innovative solutions to enhance the candidate experience. By staying proactive and adaptable, we can overcome hiring challenges and build a strong team that drives our organization's success.

What is your superpower?
I like to ask this question first and in a very informal manner. It doesn't matter how they answer, or even if they fully understand what I am asking. Watch the candidates while they answer. If they are nervous, it will show and you can help put them at ease. If they are great at something and they are aware of it, watch their passion as they tell you they can organize like a ninja, or calm even the most irate customer. Or, if your candidate is not self-aware, see how creative they are when answering.
